Shouyang county in Shanxi province has recently been recognized as a leading national photovoltaic base for its photovoltaic applications, according to a list released by the National Energy Administration on Nov 22.

In September, the National Energy Administration proposed to establish up to 10 leading photovoltaic application bases and three leading photovoltaic technology bases in China. Shouyang county succeeded in applying for the national photovoltaic base project with its ample sunshine and abundant land resources.

The county's photovoltaic base, with an investment of 8 billion yuan ($1.21 billion) is expected to consist of nine power stations covering 2,533.33 hectares. The total installed generating capacity from the photovoltaic base will amount to 1 million kilowatts.

It will be constructed in two phases with the first-stage project made up of five power stations which have a generating capacity of 500,000 kW.

It's estimated that the base will save standard coal of 416,000 tons annually upon completion, reducing sulfur dioxide emissions by 18,600 tons, carbon monoxide emissions by 133.9 tons, carbon dioxide emissions by 986,000 tons and nitrogen oxide emissions by 5,300 tons each year.

Besides Shouyang county, Datong city and Changzhi city in Shanxi province have also been listed as leading national photovoltaic bases for photovoltaic applications and technologies.
