A delegation of European and Chinese artists from the 2017 Prague China-Europe International Art Biennale came to Dingcun village, an ancient village in Xiangfen county of Shanxi province, on May 29 to experience traditional local culture.

The delegation visited Dingcun Folk Custom Museum and watched performances of local folk customs. Items of intangible cultural heritage, such as blocks, paper-cuttings and brick carvings, were also shown to the European artists.

Dingcun village, one of the key cultural relic protection sites in China, is famous for its well-preserved residential compounds from the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. These dwellings each consist of three courtyards forming quadrangle patterns.

The Prague China-Europe International Art Biennale themed on international relations is expected to choose the ancient village as a model for "Village Art History", one of three parts of the exhibition. Local folk customs and practices, and the artistic value of residences in the village will be introduced. The biennale will be held in September.
