Shanxi Normal University (SXNU) staged a new production of The Lonesome West by British-born playwright Martin McDonagh on May 18, attracting an audience of more than 700.
The Lonesome West tells the story of two brothers who quarrel in the aftermath of the supposedly accidental shooting of their father which results in his death.
A part of McDonagh's The Leenane Trilogy, the play –– translated and adapted by the Institute of Opera, Film and Television at SXNU –– was being performed for the first time in China. In a change to traditional productions, the play deals with interpersonal relationships in contemporary society, through absurd storylines and black humor.
Rehearsals for the play began in early 2016 and involved students of SXNU, experienced translators, stage designers and directors.
Born in 1970, McDonagh, who holds dual citizenship of Britain and Ireland, has been recognized as one of the most important living playwrights in Ireland.
