Shanxi plans to build its provincial capital, Taiyuan, into a city with an "events-based economy" driven by meetings and expos and host more than 150 exhibitions each year by 2020.

According to the policies of the provincial government, Taiyuan will specially set aside funds to support the exhibtion industry. The local Changfeng CBD where Shanxi International Convention and Exhibition Center is situated will be the core area for expanding the industry. A well-equipped exhibition hall, covering an area of some 100,000 square meters, will be constructed in the city to introduce and hold large-scale events.

As for branded exhibitions, Shanxi intends to promote five displays, such as the China (Taiyuan) International Energy Industry Expo and Pingyao International Photography Festival, and develop them into exhibitions with global influence. The province is expected to play host to one or two international seminars by 2020.

Meanwhile, the province will encourage local leading companies and industrial associations to initiate online exhibitions, advancing online and offline promotional activities.

To facilitate the development of "events-based economy", Shanxi will add a new fund worth 10 million yuan ($1.45 million) to existing funds related to the exhibition industry. For example, a reward of no more than 1 million yuan will be given to each international expo introduced to the province.

In addition, the local government will simplify the application for holding fairs and exhibitions, and establish an official website for updating the public on information for various exhibitions and corresponding government policies.
