Datong boosts photovoltaic industry at wasteland

Solar panels are placed in rows at the first national photovoltaic demonstration base at the coal mining subsidence area in Datong, Shanxi province. Datong, a vital energy base in North China, relies on the coal industry to develop the local economy while large-scale mining causes subsidence in an area of 1,678 square kilometers. The demonstration base was launched by the Datong government and National Energy Administration in 2015 to reuse the derelict area and boost the photovoltaic industry, which is benefitting the reconstruction of the overexploited region and local green economy. A project with electricty capacity of one million kW at the base has been connected to the national grid, selling on average annual electricity of 1.38 billion kWh to power supply companies.
