Pingyao county in Shanxi province initiated the first session of a forum to discuss protection of its ancient city on Nov 4.

Pingyao is a well-preserved ancient city which was included as a World Cultural Heritage site in 1997, being one of only two ancient cities in China recognized by UNESCO. The city, founded in the 14th century, is a popular tourist destination thanks to its historic architecture.

The forum aimed to further people's understanding of the history and culture of the ancient city, as well as raise public awareness about preserving cultural heritage.

Dong Peiliang, an expert in the research of Pingyao culture, was invited to give a speech on the history of Pingyao Ancient City and its value as a historical site. He introduced the architectural layout and function of the ancient city walls. Meanwhile, he pointed out several misunderstandings about the county's history and culture.

More than 40 people, such as professionals in the field of ancient city conservation, Pingyao residents and representatives of local tourist attractions, took part in the forum. The forum will be held regularly to encourage more people to join in the protection of Pingyao and its cultural heritage.
