Colorful Yanhu Lake in Yuncheng

Yanhu Lake in Yuncheng, Shanxi province, which is divided into several parts by the avenue straddling the lake, appears green and red in different parts on Sept 25, causing locals to say that the lake looks like a large Yuanyang pot, a type of hotpot divided into different compartments containing spicy and non-spicy broth. The amazing phenomenon is caused by a kind of algae which can turn red in specific situations. Yanhu Lake, which has an area of 132 square kilometers, is often called China's Dead Sea due to its high salinity. The lake turns red, blue and green as the seasons change and algae propagate.
