The flight, operated by China Southern Airlines, will go into service on Aug 4, and will be available on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, cutting travel times to two and a half hours.

The route is expected to boost tourism and investment from the Pearl River Delta to the region, and play a significant role in promoting exchanges between Xinzhou and cities in Guangdong province.

An official from China Southern Airlines said the new route would create greater convenience for travellers from Shanxi province as Guangzhou airport has a vast wealth of domestic and international travel routes.

In recent years, Wu Tai Shan Airport has opened flight routes to domestic cities including Shanghai, Tianjin, Chongqing and Yinchuan. In addition, it has launched bus routes, set up ticket offices and established a customer service center to provide greater convenience to passengers.

Representatives from travel agencies remarked that the rapid development of Wu Tai Shan Airport has directly increased the number of tourists travelling to Mount Wutai.
