Taiyuan began to replace the city's taxis with BYD electric vehicles from Jan 20 as part of the cooperation between Shanxi province and BYD Auto Co Ltd, Shanxi Evening News has reported.

Taiyuan's passenger transport administration said on Jan 20 that taxi licenses in the city's six districts have expired, and in addition the time for taxis to be scrapped has come or will come soon. Drivers will have to replace their old vehicle with an electric one to be re-licensed.

According to the plan, applications for taxi driving licenses will be taken after the Spring Festival that falls on Feb 8 this year.

As of now, however, taxi drivers may apply at taxi companies for a replacement electric vehicle.
