Taiyuan University of Technology, a university in Shanxi’s capital Taiyuan, was listed among the top 400 universities in the QS University Ranking: BRICS 2015, and the only one from Shanxi province.

The QS University Ranking of BRICS in 2015 is a dedicated ranking of the top universities in the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) carried out by Quacquarelli Symonds, a global provider of specialist higher education and career solutions.

The history of Taiyuan University of Technology goes back to 1902, when it was called the Western Studies School of Shanxi Grand Academy, one of the three earliest national universities in China.

It is now a university included in Project 211 – the national higher education promotion program for the top 100 universities in China. The university has 76 undergraduate disciplines, 126 master's degree programs, 49 doctoral programs and 13 post-doctoral research centers. It has three national authorized disciplines and four State-level educational demonstration centers, with students from across the world. Currently, it has nearly 27,000 full-time undergraduates, 5,000 postgraduates and more than 700 PhD students.

There were 110 Chinese universities included in the top 400 of QS University Ranking: BRICS 2015, more of the other four BRICS countries. Three universities from China occupied the ranking’s top three places: Tsinghua University, Peking University and Fudan University.
