A collaborative innovation center of extreme optics was unveiled at Shanxi University. The center was initiated by Shanxi University, together with the cooperation of Peking University, East China Normal University, Nankai University, Zhejiang University, and Xi’an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics under the Chinese Academy of Science. A seminar was also held at Shanxi University for their work in the 13th Five-Year Plan period.

Extreme optics is a discipline that studies how to control light as well as interactions with other substances under such conditions as an extremely short time, an extremely small space, extremely high density and extremely low temperatures.

The collaborative center has six platforms ranging from ultra-fast laser physics, extreme optics of atoms and molecules, as well as major applications of extreme optics. Centering on key problems in the industry, the center will conduct studies about new physics, phenomena and devices under extreme conditions to solve problems in such fields as aviation, information security and biomedicine. It has achieved creative results in a series of major scientific problems as optical field regulation and control as well as interaction between light and substances.
