A communal garden, which is a new experiential rural tourism activity, has emerged in Shanghai's Jiading district.

Located in an agricultural greenhouse in Dengta village in Jiading Industrial Zone, a 1333.33-square-meter communal garden has been divided into over 60 blocks of fields to plant various vegetables.

The communal garden is a new trial for making good use of rural resources, which offers people living in the urban area an opportunity to explore a rural lifestyle, said Jin Yunlong, an agriculture officer in the village. Tourists can try their hands at planting vegetables, which is an experiential activity different from simply taking photos of rural tourism.

Under the guidance of the managerial staff members of the communal garden, children can learn to spade the soil, sow seeds, and transplant seedings.

Currently, five families have each adopted one of the small planting areas in the communal garden.

One of the communal gardeners is a women surnamed Zhang who recently visited the garden to transplant seedings with her daughter and she said she would take her daughter here every week to weed and water the plants. "It's an amazing experience to eat the vegetables that we planted by ourselves," Zhang said.
