Lecture on printing: from movable typography to 3D printing

( chinadaily.com.cn ) 2019-08-30

Movable typography, one of the four great inventions of ancient China and 3D printing, a high-end tech-savvy modern technology, combined into a great topic for a lecture held recently in Shanghai's Jiading district.

The lecture attracted some curious elementary school students and started with the story of Bi Sheng's invention of typography, which was 400 years earlier than the work of Johannes Gutenberg, German craftsman and inventor who originated a method of printing using movable typography.

Chen Yiming, the lecturer, invited an engineer friend to join the event, who brought along a 3D printer to show the students its operating principle. The engineer gave an on-site 3D printing show, producing a hollow sphere that fascinated the kids.

Chen also encouraged the students to follow the spirit of Bi Sheng, making effort and enquiries in daily life.
