Welfare institute for aged to open in Jiading

The first stage of the Jiading No 1 Social Welfare Institute has completed construction recently and will start operation before the end of October in Jiading district of Shanghai, informed an official.

But unlike other local nursing homes, the institute will focus on housing the elderly who suffered from dementia and lost the ability to live on their own.

The officer further said that in the first-phase of project, it covers an area of 38.4 mu (2.6 hectares), and is designed to have a bed capacity of 498. With an investment of 200 million yuan ($31.4 million), the institute consists of office rooms, an assembly hall for movies and performances, a multifunctional room for training programs, dormitories for the elderly, a laundary room, a reading room and an infirmary. The infirmary, which covers an area of 600 square meters, includes a pharmacy, rescue rooms and recovery rooms.

In addition, there is also a 400- square-meter park in the institute for the elderly to take a walk and enjoy the sun during the daytime. The park also has exercise facilities that can help the elderly keep healthy.

Apart from the facilities, the institute also gives great importance to the recruitment of nurses. Nurses will undergo various training courses on nursing skills and psychology classes as well as a three-month practical training, the officer added.
