( chinadaily.com.cn ) 2013-07-05

About the city

The city of Weimar is 20 kilometers east of the capital of Thuringer State and is home to 60,000 inhabitants. With beautiful scenery, the city is famed as "a park with a city instead of a city with a park".

Weimar was once the cultural center of Germany and was also known as the "Athens of Germany". Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller, two great literary masters, created their literary works here. Franz Liszt and other world-famous artists also lived here.

Establishment of friendly relations

On August 11, 2003, Weimar Mayor Dr. Volkhardt Germer visited the district of Jiading and expressed the hope for friendly exchanges. At the end of April 2004, the two sides signed the Agreement on Friendly Exchanges and Cooperation Between Jiading District of Shanghai Municipality of China and the City of Weimar of Germany.
