( chinadaily.com.cn ) 2013-07-05

About the city

The city of Yao is under the jurisdiction of Osaka. With the city of Osaka to its west, Yao is noted for its developed industry and thriving commerce. It has about 280,000 inhabitants in an area of about 41 square kilometers. Yao is one of the cities to join the World Declaration of Non-Nuclear Peace Metropolises.

Establishment of friendly relations

The former Jiading county established friendly relations with the city of Yao in 1981, and they signed the Agreement on Friendship and Cooperation Between Shanghai's Jiading County and Osaka's Yao City on September 13, 1986.

Jiading became a district in October 1992 and formally established a sister-city relationship with Yao on May 15, 1993. In the same year, the district head and city mayor agreed in an exchange of letters that the agreement on friendship and cooperation signed in 1986 will be changed into an Agreement on Friendly Cities Between Shanghai's Jiading District and Osaka's Yao City, with all the provisions of the former agreement continuing to be valid.
