The new airport project in Qingdao, Shandong province, whose goal is to link the eastern coastal city to Northeast Asia, has launched public bidding on Nov 24, for the design of its 450,000 square-meter terminal.

The airport location is in Jiaozhou, on the outskirts of Qingdao. The first phase over the next four years calls for two 3,600-meter parallel runways and a 450,000-square-meter terminal. Upon completion it will be classed as a 4F airport by the International Civil Aviation Organization standards, and Boeing 380 and Boeing 787, so far the world’s largest aircrafts, will be able to take off and land. With a total investment of over 30 billion yuan ($4.8 billion), the 662,000-square-meter airport is expected to be ready for operation by 2025, and will be able to handle 35 million passengers annually, if all goes according to plan.
