Preliminary statistics show that Qingdao achieved 304 key scientific and research results in 2012 and received national 9 scientific and technological prizes. Of the total, 2 were for technological invention and 7 were for scientific and technological progress; it also received 105 provincial-level scientific and technological prizes. Of them, 7 were for natural science, 5 were for technological inventions, 93 were for scientific and technological progress.

By the end of 2012, there were 24 higher education schools (including private schools) including 22ordinary colleges and universities. There were 297,000 students enrolled, up 1.9%. 292 were ordinary middle schools, enrolling 370,000 students, down 0.98%; technical secondary schools and vocational schools numbered 88, enrolling 137,000, down 6.9%. The number of students in vocational secondary schools accounted for 52.5% of the number of senior middle school students. There were 840 primary schools enrolling 485,000 pupils, up 1.1% and 100% of pre-school aged children were schooled. The schooling of youngsters for junior middle school was over 99%.
