Lingshan Island, an island off the coast of Qingdao, struggles with fresh water shortages, and has exploited an alternate water source.

The seawater desalination project in Lingshan Island passed acceptance in November. The project, costing 4 million yuan ($640,000), is designed to provide 300-ton fresh water per day for islanders who used to rely on drinking water from rain. Owing to the reverse osmosis technique used, the water, costing 5 to 6 yuan per cubic meter, has a PH value of 7, featuring low salinity and good taste.
