The city of Wuxi, Jiangsu province invited 60 Taiwan students from Peking University School of Software and Microelectronics at Wuxi to visit several local cultural attractions from Dec 1 to 3.
At a music concert in Tianhua Art School, Taiwan students were immersed in melodious traditional Chinese folk music. "My father used to play Erhu music at home," said a Taiwan girl Hu Yating, putting her ears closely to the Erhu strings; "the Erhu music really makes me feel at home."
Many other students shared their close feelings about the city. As in Taiwan, people in Wuxi eat longevity noodles at birthday, a tradition of wishing for longevity. Elderly people love playing mahjong and poker games at home. Such similar living habits add to the students' special affection for the city.
Wuxi's high level of smart city development really impressed these students as well. Wuxi Sunan International Airport provides direct flight to Taiwan. Free WIFI spots have covered all the buses and public areas of the city. Many shops in the city have brought in a mobile payment function.
Many Taiwan students expressed their willingness to stay in the city after graduation due to its livable environment, convenient traffic and professional development space. "Traditional life style and modern industries integrate perfectly here," said Wang Xin, a Taiwan student majored in communications, adding, "I appreciate the leisure lifestyle and comfortable traffic experience here so much."
According to the school teachers, many Taiwan students have their family businesses around the city, and are striving to explore more development opportunities.
To date, there are about 200 Taiwan students studying in Wuxi. The city has launched various cross-Straits exchange projects over the last few years, helping them better adapt to local life and promoting cross-Straits relations.
The former Wuxi New District, now known as Wuxi Xinwu district or Wuxi National Hi-tech district, was founded in 1992 and underwent administrative changes in 1995, 2002 and 2005.
