Wuxi began piloting China's first roadside accident app, ‘Jiaoguan 12123', on Jan 13 in an attempt to streamline the reporting process and to ease hassle for drivers.
Dealing with a sudden road accident is every driver's worst nightmare. Roadside incidents dredge up the same nauseating experience; a sharp tongued quarrel with the other vehicle owner, an awkward wait for the traffic police to arrive, an inevitable traffic jam, and then there's dealing with insurance companies. It's a wonder anyone bothers to drive a car!
The app has been co-developed by China's Traffic Management Research Institute, Jiangsu Traffic Police Department and Jiangsu Insurance Regulatory Bureau and hopes to markedly change the way drivers deal with small-scale road accidents.
Crucial to making the app successful is making it user friendly and Wuxi, as a smart city committed to developing Internet of Things (IoT), has developed a beautifully simple app. The app allows drivers to locate road accidents on a map, document photo evidence, collect key driver information (license plate, driver's license etc.), sign statements, and make initial insurance claims.
Although the local authorities understand that the APP cannot solve all roadside accidents, the local police hope it can help to reduce the response time to accidents. It also aims to promote the APP as a means of shortening the time it takes for accidents to be solved and therefore the frequency of traffic jams. Last year Wuxi experienced more than 300,000 traffic accidents, only 40 percent were solved in a quick and reliable manner (under 10 minutes).
