The 22nd China Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival opened in Wuhan on Sept 25.

In a news conference held on Sept 24, the organizing committee stated that after significant deliberation, the festival would focus on eight major activities, including the opening and closing ceremonies, a premiere of domestic films, an exhibition of Hong Kong and Taiwan films, an academic forum, and praises for nominees of the Golden Rooster Awards.

In addition, the opening and closing ceremonies were broadcast live on the CCTV movie channel.

Compared with past festivals, the festival this year held an opening ceremony by screening an opening film instead of hosting a gala.

The budget of the festival's opening ceremony was cut back from more than 9 million yuan ($1.47 million) to 300,000 yuan ($49,020). A wine-tasting party was no longer included in the opening ceremony.

Liu Yingzi, vice-mayor of Wuhan, announced that tickets to the opening ceremony of the festival, the red carpet show and the awards ceremony would be given to the public for free.

The Wuhan micro-film competition will be a part of the event for the first time this year. It has six awards categories: Micro-Film Award, Beijing Film Academy–Academy Award, Outstanding Micro-Film Screenplay Award, Wuhan Story Award, College Group Award and Organization Award.

As China's only national film festival, the Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival is hailed as "China's Oscars".
