Hubei has numerous Zen Buddhist temples: Sizu Temple and Wuzu Temple in Huangmei, Guiyuan Temple in Wuhan, Dongfang Temple in Huangshi, and Yuquan Temple in Dangyang. Sizu Temple in Huangmei, a world famous Buddhist holy land, was founded by Zen Master Dao Xin, the fourth patriarch of Zen. Mr. Zhao Puchu, the late former chairman of the Buddhist Association of China, once said “there is no temple without Zen in China. Zenists mostly originated from Huangmei.”

Wuzu Temple in Huangmei is where Hong Ren, the fifth patriarch of Chinese Buddhist Zen, preached Buddhism and where the sixth patriarch, Hui Neng, studied Zen. Wuzu Temple is believed to be the birthplace of Chinese Buddhism. It assumes an extremely important position in Chinese history of Buddhism.

Yuquan Temple in Dangyang is a world famous Buddhist holy land and is part of the “four unique temples in the world”, together with Guoqing Temple in Zhejiang, Lingya Temple in Shandong and Xixia Temple in Jiangsu.
