On Nov 13, the Wuhan Welfare Lotteries donated 400 one-year subscriptions of the national English newspaper, China Daily, to the freshmen of Huazhong Normal University.

Meanwhile, the Welfare Lotteries-China Daily English Speech Contest was launched on the same day, aimed at rewarding good English learners.

“My experience made me realize the importance of English in the international world, and I hope this donation will encourage more students to gain knowledge,” Sun Guowu, chief of Wuhan Welfare Lotteries, said at the donation ceremony.

He also recalled his youth at Huazhong Normal University, when he joined the university’s English corner.

“China Daily, as China’s national English-language newspaper, embraces the best editing team, and this activity will let more students get in touch with high-standard English writing,” said Zhou Lihua, chief of China Daily Hubei branch.

One of the students told China Daily that she was from a rural area, and the one-year newspaper subscription will help her English a lot. “I am looking forward to reading it,” she said.
