Rescue work underway in Huangshi, Hubei
( CNTV )
Updated: 2010-07-15

Heavy rain has continued to pound central China's Hubei Province. The rain caused a dyke to burst in Huangshi city and breach more than 10 meters wide.

The downpour was still heavy on Tuesday morning. Widespread flooding has submerged almost 30 hectares of vegetable crops in Yang-jia-shan village, heightening safety fears for locals.

Xie Yuying, local resident, said, "The rain keeps pouring. The dyke has broken, causing the water to rise rapidly. Houses have been submerged and we've had to flee."

PLA soldiers rushed to prevent the flood from spreading further by lining the water with sandbags. But the relentless rain hampered their efforts to contain the flood.

Zhan Guicheng, Head of the Yangjiasha village, said, "The heavy rain has caused massive losses to our village. Vegetable crops have been submerged, and several lakes have overflown. Soldiers and villagers are working hand-in-hand to carry out repair work and minimize further losses."

Rescuers say they have made progress in easing the floods, but will continue working in the village until danger has been alleviated.
