Phosphorus-coal-based chemicals

The city of Guiyang is one of China's three largest phosphate ore bases, with phosphate ore reserves of 428 million tons and more than 70 percent of the country's phosphate ore. The ore reserves in Kaiyang county alone amount to 390 million tons, or a third of the nation’s high-grade ore. The high-grade phosphorus pentoxide ore accounts for 78 percent of China's total. The city has used its rich phosphorus and coal resources, geographical advantages, and industrial bases and technology to form a phosphorus compound fertilizer and phosphorus-coal products system, and industrial enterprise cluster. It also has three chemical industry bases -- the Kaiyang Phosphorus and Coal Chemical Ecological Industrial Demonstration Base, Xifeng Phosphorus and Coal Chemical Ecological Industrial Demonstration Base, and Qingzhen Coal Chemical Base. Total output value of the phosphorus-coal-based chemical sectors in Guiyang, in 2011, was 26.3 billion yuan ($4.29 billion), a year-on-year increase of 35 percent.

The phosphorus-coal-based chemical industry has its focus on improving output and efficiency, combining its phosphorus, coal, water, and electricity advantages, and building an ecologically sound chemical industry system for fine phosphorus chemicals, coal chemicals, phosphorus compound fertilize, synthetic ammonia, chlorina alkali chemicals and new building materials.

Aluminum and aluminum processing

Guizhou province has proven reserves of 424 million tons of bauxite resources , or 16.9 percent of the national’s total, and third in China. The bauxite reserves in Guiyang amount to 365 million tons, or 82 percent of China's total. In addition, approximately 67 percent of the alumina-silica ratio of Guiyang’s bauxite is above eight, or higher than the national average of 5.56. Now, after 50 years of development, the city has formed a comprehensive industrial system, with alumina, electrolytic aluminum, high purity aluminum, and refined aluminum as the major products. Leading enterprises and projects are: Aluminum Corp of China's (Chalco) Guizhou Aluminum Industrial Base, Galuminium Group's 800,000-ton alumina project, and the projects of design and R&D institutes such as the Guiyang Aluminum Magnesium Design and Research Institute and the Chalco Guizhou Branch. The industry can produce 3 million tons of bauxite annually, as well as 1.2 million tons of alumina, 450,000 tons of electrolytic aluminum, 300,000 tons of carbon for aluminum use, 50 million tons of refined aluminum, and 200,000 tons of high purity aluminum. In 2011 alone, total output value of the city's aluminum and aluminum processing was 8.51 billion yuan, for a year-on-year increase of 7.58 percent.

The aluminum and aluminum processing industry in Guiyang has gained certain strength and status in China, with advanced manufacturing equipments and techniques. Its aluminum products are rated as the Well-Known Products in Guizhou and certified as the exempt products. Developing downstream aluminum industry is the current trend in Guiyang. The start of the Chalco aluminium strips project on Dec 31, 2010, with total amount of 150,000 tons and a total investment of 700 million yuan, marks the significant breakthrough of the aluminum deep processing industry in Guiyang.

Tobacco and food industry

In the tobacco industry, Guiyang's Cigarette Factory, a subsidiary of the China Tobacco Guizhou Industrial Co, is a leading provincial enterprise. It became a core part of the China Tobacco Guizhou Industrial Co after reforms in September 2005. In 2008, its total output was worth 8.48 billion yuan, and industrial added value, 5.64 billion yuan. In the food sector, Guiyang has 47 food companies, covering poultry, chili peppers, corn, soybeans, rapeseed, peanuts, ginger, onions, and garlic, and 10 product categories, with hundreds of types of food. In 2008, total output value of its food industry was 4.72 billion yuan, with 1.25 billion yuan in industrial added value.

The Nanming Food Industry Park and Wudang Food Industryl Park are leaders in the food sector in Guiyang, with the latter getting a national Agricultural Products Processing Base award from the Ministry of Agriculture and gaining recognition the Guizhou government as an Agricultural Processing Demonstration Base. Work on the Longdongbao Food and Light Industry Park, on a 903 hectare space, began in September 2010 and will be completed in 2017. It is expected to pull in 13.6 billion yuan in investment. Work continues on the Wudang Food Industry Park. It started on Jan 25, 2011, on a 69.8–hectare area of ground, and is expected to bring in nine enterprises during Phase I, and have 1 billion yuan in output value.

Equipment manufacturing

Under the 11th Five-year plan (2006-2010), Guiyang's equipment manufacturing developed rapidly and became its first pillar industry and it has developed equipment with some high-level technology, such as a 20-t energy-saving hybrid hydraulic excavator, high-speed engineering vehicle, vertical shaft crusher, heavy CNC roll grinder, CNC wire cut electric discharge machine, CNC deep-hole drill, CNC cutter grinder, WCYJW series of permanent magnet motor pumps, and automobile parts. Its gross product value, for 2011, was 36.19 billion yuan ($5.88billion), a year-on-year increase of 30.15 percent.

Guiyang has a comprehensive array of mid-sized to large equipment manufacturers with advanced equipment, technological strength, and good economic benefits. The Guizhou Jonyang Kinetics Co is a domestic leader in hydraulic excavators, while the Guizhou Xianfeng Industrial Co is one of the Top 10 producers of large slide grinders and forging equipment, and the Guiyang Xintian Oetech Co focuses on the production of high-tech optical instruments. With its abundance of professionals and R&D and production strengths, Guiyang has been able to build an industrial system that covers seven equipment manufacturing industries. It has industrial clusters in construction machinery, automobiles and automobile parts, and electronic components, with high-level technical creation sites and specialty products.

Modern Logistics

Thanks to municipal government support, Guiyang's logistics sector has grown and has more functions and is playing a more important role in the local economy. Its logistics industry added-value output, for 2012, was more than 13 billion yuan ($2.12 billion), for an increase of 14.5 percent year-on-year and Its logistics revenues were nearly 28.9 billion yuan, an increase of 14.5 percent year-on-year. Total freight volume that year was above 166 million tons, an increase of 19.8 percent year-on-year. Guiyang is headed to become a regional logistics center, in line with the State Council's plans for 2012 and plans to take advantage of the "Southeast logistics passage to the sea" and "the Central Guizhou Economic Zone" and build two logistics hubs -- the Guizhou Mengguan International Logistics Center and Longdongbao International Aviation Logistics Park -- and three regional logistics parks – Zhazuo Logistics, Qingzhen Logistics, and Jinhua Logistics. It also expects to build some cargo logistics and distribution centers, push the construction of dry ports and bonded zones andl attract famous logistics companies to help develop four major projects in international and regional logistics, urban distribution, and logistics - industry links.

Modern pharmaceuticals

Guizhou province is known for its herbal resources and has turned its pharmaceutical sector into a pillar industry over the past decade, and now has 74 pharmaceutical companies and an industrial structure that covers a diverse range of biological products, Chinese patent medicines, pharmaceutical chemicals, medical consumables, and Chinese medicinal decoctions. Its Miao medicine won the "Best Cultural Practice Contributing to Sustainable Development" award, for 2005, from UNESCO. It has the Xiuwen Zhazuo Pharmaceutical Industry and Wudang Pharmaceutical Industry parks, with an output value of more than 100 million yuan each, and 22 pharmaceutical companies, including Yibai Pharmaceutical, Tongjitang Pharmaceutical, Jianxing Pharmaceutical, Jianxing Pharmaceutical, and Xintian Pharmaceutical. Yibai, Tongjitang and Shenqi now bear the "China Famous Trademark" title.

The city's four-year development plan (2009-2012) called for the Guiyang modern pharmaceutical industry to have a total industrial output value of of 14.5 billion yuan ($2.4 billion) and industrial added value output of 6.03 billion yuan, in 2012, The city also planned to plant 1,000 – 2,000 hectares of land in herbs and Incubation bases, develop 10-15 new national-level medicines and develop two technology projects at the provincial or national level. Guiyang wants to push construction of traditional Chinese medicinal herb bases with standardized management in seed selection, planting, picking, and processing to produce medicinal herbs that meet national standards. These bases can encourage institutes to increase processing and development to improve the added value of the herbs and drive the pharmaceutical enterprises of Guiyang.
