The city of Guiyang, Guizhou province enjoyed 257 consecutive days of good air this year, as of Nov 30, according the Guiyang Ecology Committee, which says that it broke the previous record of continual good-air in 2014, thanks to new air quality standards implemented at the end of 2012, leading to 113 days in 2013 and 133 in 2014.

Its Party secretary, said Chen Gang, notes, "The fresh air is the city's ecological advantage and we cannot lose that."

On the Environmental Protection Ministry's list of 74 main cities for air monitoring, Guiyang was one of the top 10 as of October of this year, according to Luo Yi, head of the ministry's environmental monitoring department.

Luo added that Wuhan, in Hubei province, Jinan in Shandong and Changchun in Jilin had more than 50 percent of the bad-air days, where PM2.5 is the main pollutant. In monitoring air quality by measuring PM10 and PM 2.5, Guiyang introduced trial penalties and rewards this past July for counties and districts under its jurisdiction.

The director of the Guiyang Ecology Committee, said Sun Zhonghua, concludes, "Most of the dust came from construction sites and transportation and Guiyang has worked to control these sources of pollutants, including waste sites."
