The economy of the city of Guiyang, in Guizhou province has shown better performance in the first half of this year, than other cities in the province, even though it is still an emerging city, according to the municipal government report on Aug 31.

One reason could be the two new high-speed railway lines which have affected tourism, which brought in 42.65 million people in the first half, for a 17.2-percent growth over last year, and 52.6 billion yuan ($8.24 billion) in revenues, up 19.3 percent year-on-year.

The high-speed rail lines have also sped up infrastructure construction in the city, which has put more than 3.2 billion yuan into its subway line 1 and preparations for line 2, and have helped add 115,800 jobs in the same time period, bringing the unemployment rate down to 3.01 percent.

The city says it will focus on improving people's livelihoods and getting rid of poverty in the second half, with the goal of helping 14,400 people escape poverty.
