The city of Guiyang, Guizhou province recently came up with an application of big data technology to control traffic lights.

The project is a result of an effort of the Chinese Academy of Science's Software Institute, NTT DATA , which works on IT systems integration with headquarter in Tokyo, and the Guiyang Machinery Marketing Academy, according to local authorities.

The idea is to ease congestion and shorten travel times by combining transportation infrastructure with big data analysis by the Chinese Academy of Science, improved techniques from NTT DATA, and data mining techniques from the Marketing Academy.

Guiyang has a history of using advanced technology to solve traffic problems and began work on an intelligent transportation system in 2009, so it has chosen the Guanshanhu district for the first place trial run of the traffic control.

It also built a data center with the help of the local Public Utility Authority and the Chinese Academy of Science to manage traffic flow, in 2014, and a research center on April 2 of that same year for better traffic flow by cooperating with the Academy of Science and NTT DATA.
