Abstract:

Demand on forage is quickly increasing in China, along with the development of animal husbandry industry. Currently there is a gap in the supply of forage grain to meet the demand; pressure on the demand will pile up in the near future. The solution is to transfer from a two-sector crop structure (food grain and cash crop) to a three-sector structure (food grain, cash crop and forage). Also needed is to increase the rate of return on forage in animal raising through new technology. The forage grain is becoming a major category in China's agriculture. Today the consumption of forage grain is getting to the par of food grain, with a possibility in the near future to dominate China's grain consumption.
