By Sun Zhiyan, Department of Development Strategy and Regional Economy, Development Research Center of the State Council (DRC)

Research Report No 114, 2014 (Total 4613)

Summary:

The US 2050 regional development new strategy is a research project aiming to work out the top-level design for regional development in the next three to four decades in the US, proposed by the United States federal government and many other departments and research institutes. It has made an overall plan of the US regional development, including its strategic goal, basic principles and development path, which China can learn a lot from in terms of making a mid-to-long-term regional strategy.

The research in this report suggests China improve its top design in regional development and build a united regional policy framework based on its analysis of the US project. In addition, the country may focus on per capita income to increase consistency and fairness of China’s regional policies. Regional policies also need to pay special attention to narrowing the development gap between regions; promoting the flow of capital, factors and people across regions; and innovating urban governance.
