Weihai breaks ground on new coastal boardwalk to boost tourism

Weihai has begun construction on a landmark coastal boardwalk, a project to raise the city's seaside tourism appeal. Once finished, the 500-meter stretch will connect key shoreline attractions, creating a continuous "golden line" for sightseeing, leisure, and recreation.

The boardwalk will extend from Torch Eighth Street — a popular social media check-in spot — to Xiaoshi Island, a nationally recognized 3A scenic site. Following the natural curves of the coastline, the path will seamlessly connect with the existing wooden walkway, forming a cohesive scenic corridor for both locals and tourists to enjoy.

Constructed on steel and concrete foundations, the path will feature eco-friendly bamboo-wood decking and durable aluminum-alloy railings. Along the route, four designated rest areas will provide spaces to pause and take in sweeping ocean views. The design includes barrier-free features for full accessibility, complemented by amenities such as lighting and seating to enhance the overall visitor experience.

Local officials envision the boardwalk as more than a pedestrian route; it will be a coastal attraction in itself — an open-air "sea-view balcony" that integrates the local ecology, leisure activities, and tourism. By blending natural beauty with thoughtful design, the project is expected to bring new energy to Weihai's tourism sector and attract more visitors to its shores.  (Edited by Hu Kaili)
