Summer tourism fuels consumer boom in Weihai
Weihai, a coastal city in Shandong province, is riding a wave of summer tourism that is turning enthusiasm into economic momentum. A surge of holidaymakers has ignited strong consumer demand, prompting retailers to upgrade both products and services.
Supermarkets across the city have quickly adapted to the seasonal rush. Dedicated sections now feature regional specialties such as ready-to-eat seafood, Jiaodong hubobo (decorated steamed buns), and dried figs — treats that capture the local flavor. Many outlets are also offering value-added services like free fruit washing and express delivery, making shopping easier for travelers on the go.

Retailers are broadening their offerings to match tourists' outdoor activities. At Jiajiayue supermarket in Huancui district, there are nearly 200 new summer-focused items, from beach toys and clam-digging kits to sun hats, swimming gear, and camping supplies. The strategy is proving effective: sales of tourism-related products are already up more than 10 percent compared with last year.

For many visitors, these enhancements are making their trips much more enjoyable. "We came from Dongying to let the kids try clam digging. We didn't pack everything, but the supermarket had it all, which made things so much easier," said one tourist.
