Weihai unveils major waterway revitalization campaign
Weihai in East China's Shandong province has launched a comprehensive program to restore rivers and lakes, improve water quality, and transform its waterways into vibrant hubs for ecology, culture, and tourism. The plan, set out in the city's 12th annual directive on river and lake management, outlines infrastructure upgrades, habitat restoration, and community-driven projects aimed at achieving cleaner, safer, and more scenic waterways by 2035.
Central to the initiative is a citywide campaign to improve water environments in both urban and rural areas. Projects will focus on cleaning river channels, upgrading sewage treatment, reinforcing embankments, and creating accessible riverside spaces. Authorities will also expand waterfront leisure parks to encourage recreational use, blending environmental protection with public enjoyment.
Weihai will enhance monitoring systems by integrating satellite imaging, drone inspections, and on-site patrols to ensure ongoing maintenance and early detection of pollution risks. Public engagement will play a key role, with volunteer river stewards and school programs promoting water conservation awareness.
The city aims to complete a network of interconnected clean waterways, supporting both biodiversity and eco-tourism. By combining modern technology, environmental engineering, and community participation, Weihai's leadership hopes to set a benchmark for sustainable waterway management — creating an environment where residents and visitors can enjoy the city's natural beauty year-round.
