From April 24 to 28, Gaomi paper-cutting master Li Jinbo displayed the charm of traditional Chinese folk art at the 39th Icheon Ceramic Festival in Icheon, South Korea, a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.

Li, a provincial-level inheritor of China's national intangible cultural heritage, hails from Gaomi, a city in Shandong province known for its rich folk art traditions. He brought delicate small-format works, including Chinese zodiac screens, floral designs symbolizing good fortune, and a harmonious golden dragon. ''Small pieces, big culture,'' he said, emphasizing the depth of Chinese tradition.

Visitors were amazed to see such vividly depicted birds, flowers, and animals emerge from a single sheet of paper and a pair of scissors. Some praised the work with Chinese they had learned, and even Mayor Kim Kyung-hee admired the craftsmanship, describing it as ''incredibly detailed and beautiful''.

Gaomi paper-cutting is known for its elegant lines, bold structure, and rich storytelling. Li blends classical techniques with modern creativity, ensuring the tradition continues to evolve while preserving its cultural roots.

In recent years, Gaomi's folk arts – including paper-cutting, clay sculpture, and New Year prints – have gained global recognition. Li's appearance in South Korea further promotes cultural exchange and brings China's heritage to a wider audience.

''Through international exchange, we broaden our vision and deepen cultural confidence,'' said Li. ''I'll keep sharing Gaomi paper-cutting with the world''. (Edtied by Li Qiaoxingzi)
