Shandong's Juye facilitates inland waterway transportation
This winter, a daily rate of 10,000 metric tons of coke and quartz sand are being shipped into the inland waterway network of southwestern Shandong province daily from Juye Port in Juye county, Shandong province, where they will be transported to various parts of the country.
Heze Xuyang New Energy Company, a coke production enterprise, used to face high transportation costs. Now, the company's coke is entirely transported by water from Shandong to Fujian, reducing costs by over 70 percent.
"We need to transport 1 million tons of coke annually. Previously, we had to use trucks to send it to the nearby Senda Port in Jining, Shandong, with a freight cost of 46 yuan ($6.34) per ton. With the opening of Juye Port, the 1 million tons of coke can save more than 20 million yuan by water transportation," said Yao Yuanman, head of Beijing Xuyang Group's operations at Juye Port.
To shorten the loading and unloading time of port cargo, the Qilin Operation Area of Juye Port has implemented a smart system. All arriving ships report their arrival three hours in advance on a program, and upon arrival, personnel handle the unloading and loading.
Port manager Wang Guanghua stated that thanks to the smart system, the port's throughput reached 1.7 million tons by October this year, an 18 percent year-on-year increase, and it is expected to achieve its annual target ahead of schedule.
Juye county, located in southwestern Shandong, is an inland county with abundant water transport resources, including the Zhusui River and the Xinwanfu River. To turn the waterways into industrial advantages, Juye has planned and constructed the Qilin and Wanfeng operation areas of the port in accordance with the overall development plan of Heze Port in Shandong. The county has cultivated port-side industries, continuously expanded new paths for inland cities to open up, and worked towards a transportation system combining water, land, and air.
