Hedong: Live-stream boosts lotus root sales
As the peak season for lotus root sales arrives, Hedong district in Linyi city is expanding its market presence with a great idea. A live-streaming station has been set up right by the lotus ponds, where local farmers dig and sell fresh lotus roots in real time so that it creates an engaging shopping experience for online viewers.

At the lotus root fields in Xubahu village, Bahu town, a live-stream host shows off the high-quality Bahu lotus roots to a growing audience. Farmers are pulling out huge lotus roots from the ponds, sorting them by hand, and packaging them for shipment. The entire process was broadcast live, allowing customers to see the roots being harvested and prepared for delivery.

"We use organic fertilizers, which makes our lotus roots larger, crisper, and more delicate, with no fiber and rich in nutrients,”said Yu Deli, the person in charge of the lotus root planting cooperative.
Bahu lotus roots have a crisp texture, long shape, and excellent flavor, making them a popular choice. E-commerce platforms have further boosted their visibility as a nationally recognized geographical indication product.
In recent years, the district has expanded sales channels for local agricultural products by having young live-streamers broadcast right by the ponds. This has helped farmers reach a wider market and inspired youth to contribute to rural vitalization. (Edited by Lin Li)
