Sugarcane brings sweet success to Shandong farmers

With autumn here, the stout, dark sugarcane plants in Dangji town, Chengwu county, Shandong have entered their harvest season.

Farmer Guo Shunming is busy in his sugarcane field cutting stalks and stripping leaves. His skillful and efficient movements show his expertise and joy for it.

Through continuous experimentation and improvement, the local government has successfully introduced southern sugarcane varieties to the north. The sugarcane he grows is gaining popularity in nearby villages and towns for being crispy, easy to chew, and sweet. When the sugarcane ripens, it attracts numerous tourists who come to taste it.

Developing industries that benefit everyone is the key and long-term strategy to achieve rural vitalization. Chengwu county has made significant efforts to optimize its planting structure to guide farmers to develop specialty crops, increase agricultural added value, and introduce more southern fruit varieties to take root in the north.
