The Ruan: A timeless string instrument of China
The Ruan, a traditional plucked string instrument of the Han Chinese, also known as the Ruan Xian or Ruan Qin, has a rich history and evolving identity. It was originally referred to as the Qin Pipa in ancient times. However, its name changed with the introduction of the curved-neck Pipa, which adopted the name "Pipa." The instrument was then named after Ruan Xian, a celebrated master of its performance.
Over the centuries, the Ruan has undergone numerous reforms. Today, modern Ruans are renowned for their rich and mellow tone, available in various forms such as soprano Ruan, small Ruan, alto Ruan, large Ruan, bass Ruan, and bowed Ruan. These instruments are widely used in both solo and ensemble performances.
