Traditional art of gourd carving wows folks in Linshu county
Gourd carving – a traditional art form that involves carving various patterns and characters on gourds by using knives and needles – has been attracting widespread attention in Linshu county, in Linyi city in East China's Shandong province.
This very special craft combines the shape of the gourd with meticulously carved patterns, which are then colored to create a stunning visual effect.
Originating in the Song Dynasty (960-1279) and flourishing during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), gourd carving requires precision and skill.
It features a diverse range of subjects – including flowers, birds, fish, insects, animals, landscapes and mythical stories.
Moreover, it harmoniously integrates with traditional Chinese culture and reflects the local culture.
Representing the art of gourd carving in Linshu county is Mi Zitao, a master craftsman who has been learning and promoting the art since childhood.
His dedication to gourd carving has earned him numerous accolades. Mi has actively participated in various exhibitions and demonstrations of intangible cultural heritage at the provincial and municipal level, receiving high praise for his work.
As the art of gourd carving continues to captivate audiences, it serves as a testament to the enduring beauty of traditional Chinese craftsmanship and the cultural heritage of Linshu.
