East China's Shandong province is busy these days raising the profile of the concept of the rule of law throughout its length and breadth – including at the grassroots level in the rural communities.
Gezhuang village is one of them. The community, near the Yellow River embankment in Zuoying town in Juancheng county – located in Heze city – has built so-called legal culture walls to promote the awareness of the rule of law among local folks.
With a current population of 800, the village was relocated from the flood-prone riverbank area in 1996. In the wake of that, after the people moved into their new houses, their per capita disposable income has increased significantly.
This year, the village transformed one of its streets into a walkway themed on legal culture. The walls along the street were decorated with beautiful paintings and catchy legal slogans – bringing awareness of the rule of law into villagers' hearts and minds, shaping the mindsets of residents in a positive way.
The walls are also said to have helped to improve social order and harmony there. The villagers can resolve their disputes and conflicts through legal channels and mediation. They respect each other's rights and interests and abide by the law and discipline. (Edited by Fan Yuanyuan)
