Craftsman injects new life into Jinshan inkstones
Master Xu Yongchang, a stone carver from Qianwangzhuang village – located in Juye county in East China's Shandong province – is fast becoming famous for his exquisite craftsmanship in creating Jinshan inkstones.
This traditional art requires a meticulous process, including stone selection, design, carving and polishing.
Jinshan inkstone work, known for its abundant mineral resources, has been renowned for centuries. Inspired by its natural beauty, master Xu has dedicated over 20 years towards mastering the art of stone carving.

Growing up surrounded by stone carvings in his village, Xu developed a profound interest in this ancient art form. He was apprenticed at various stone carving workshops and sought the guidance of experienced artisans in neighboring villages.
His dedication and talent paid off when he had the opportunity to study under master carver Wang Zhonghui, further honing his skills.
In recent years, the value of Jinshan stone has been reevaluated due to the effort of the Rural Vitalization Service Team in Juye county. Experts have recognized the fine texture, vibrant colors, diverse patterns and ink retention properties of Jinshan stone – considering it suitable for crafting high-quality inkstones.
In December 2020, a panel of experts designated Jinshan inkstone as a new variety of inkstone, representing a significant achievement in Juye's stone-carving industry.
Driven by his passion, Xu intends to continue refining his carving skills and contributing to the growth of Jinshan inkstones. He aspires to make them a nationally recognized cultural treasure. (Edited by Jin Yongxue)
