Hefei, capital of Anhui province, outshone 24 other pilot cities in China in promoting new energy vehicles.
The news was announced in a press conference by Green Auto China 2013, which was held in the city on May 17.
Statistics from the meeting showed that Hefei is home to more than 30 green automobile-related businesses, with annual output of 5 billion yuan ($806 million) in 2012. It has introduced 5,622 electric vehicles to the road since 2009, ranking first among 25 pilot cities for new energy vehicles.
An increasing number of green vehicles are being used for the city's public transportation services, including garbage trucks, machine shop vehicles, buses and taxis.
The city set its annual capacity targets for the 2011-2015 period at 100,000 new energy cars and 5,000 new energy buses.
