Oldest whisky under hammer(Scotsman.com)Updated: 2006-11-27 15:48
The Glenavon Special Liqueur Whisky, believed to be almost 150 years old, is expected to fetch between ¡ê5000 and ¡ê10,000 when it goes under the hammer in London on November 29. The two-part moulded olive-green glass bottle, which is unusually small in size, contains about 14 fluid ounces of pale gold liquid and is believed to have been bottled by the Glenavon Distillery in Banffshire between 1851 and 1858. The distillery was known to be operating in 1851 but is believed to have been closed down in 1858 when J&G Smith moved to another site. Whisky expert Charles MacLean said: "Since the label reads 'Glenavon' and
'Bottled by the Distillers,' it implies that it was bottled before the
move." |
