Even if Beyonce lost 20 pounds in 10 days, drinking instead of eating,
she rushed to warn everyone about the dangers of the wonder-diet arguing that
she is happy with her curvy looks but her next movie's role came first and she
is fully aware of the consequences. Her diet is nothing but a combination of
maple syrup, water, cayenne pepper and lemon juice, known as"the maple syrup
diet".
"I'm very conscious of being a curvy woman and I'm very happy that I am a
curvy woman. I would never recommend it to anyone unless you are doing a movie
and it's necessary, and you have proper help"she said.
Health experts claim that this diet sends each of its followers in a hospital
if they try it more than 10 days.
"The problem is not what's in the diet but what's not. There are no fats,
proteins, vitamins or minerals and the only carbohydrate is in the form of
sugar... People would start to feel very lethargic and would be unable to
concentrate... They will probably end up in hospital, especially people who try
it for more than 10 days."
Beyonce's reason is pretty easy to understand, she had to slim down fast for
her upcoming movie"Dreamgirls", where she plays a sixties soul diva. She said:
"In Dreamgirls, (my character) Dina starts at 16--and then 20 years
pass."
"Normally they'd change your make-up or your clothes but I wanted to
go the extra mile. Back in the sixties, models like Twiggy were popular and I
knew Dina would have been thin then, so even though I really love eating, it was
necessary to lose weight really fast because we shot Dina at 16 and Dina at 36
two weeks apart."
"My nutritionist suggested the only way to do that was the (maple syrup)
fast. As soon as it was over, I gained the weight back."she added.
In an interview with GMTV she said that "It's great because I look at the
movie and I don't recognize myself - which was the point!. The funniest part was
putting the weight back on and eating my doughnuts and all the other things, so
now I'm back to my body."
Beyonce admitted in a recent interview: "At the wrap party the day after
filming they had these cupcakes and I ate about twelve. After that I ate
waffles, fried chicken, cheeseburgers, french fries, everything I could find.
That was the best time of my life. I've gained twelve pounds."
The diet was presented for the first time by a Swiss health company in 1985
and reached a high popularity very fast. According to Cuka Clarke, who runs a
maple syrup distribution business, sales grew intensely. "Five years ago we were
selling about 500 pots a year, mainly to friends and relatives. Now we are
selling about 2,000 a month. People recommend it to each other because the
results are so amazing."
"It is safe-fasting as old as the Bible. When you are born you spend nine
months on a liquid diet and when you are ill in hospital they put you on a
liquid diet", Cuka Clarke added.
Nutritionist Amanda Ursell says that the diet works because cayenne pepper or
ginger speeds up your metabolism by 15% for a few hours after eating. The
maple syrup gives you energy --you can use honey, treacle or another natural
glucose source-and the lemon makes the drink taste nice.
