High heel race in Russia Updated: 2006-07-12 11:09

On Saturday, a race on high-heels took place in Moscow near GUM
shopping centre.
The first prize in the 80 metre sprint was obtained by a 25-year-old
Muscovite who covered the distance in 13.52 seconds. In her words, she "only
bought the high-heels the day before". However, the organizers explained that
the winner regularly participates in sports events, particularly races.
The prize received by the winner consisted of a shopping voucher worth
100,000 roubles (about 3,500 dollars) to be spent in GUM. Second and third
places in the race were rewarded by the organizers with 30,000 roubles (about
1,000 dollars) and 15,000 roubles (about 500 dollars) correspondingly. In
addition, a few participants received consolation prizes. Altogether, seven
races took places with seven participants in each race.
According to the organizers of the event, the idea of having such a race was
taken from the Dutch, who held a similar competition in Amsterdam six months
ago. In Russia , four races have been planned. One took place in Ekaterinburg
last Saturday, another on the 8th July in Moscow , and on 22nd and 23rd July
they will be held in Novosibirsk and St Petersburg.
