Time for teppanyaki

Food reviews

Clean and elegant Uama Teppanyaki's Zhongguancun Restaurant is a pleasant place to have a meal. Three areas with huge iron plates are suitable for groups of 20-30 people. A private room has an iron plate and plenty of room suitable for a company meeting over dinner.

At 158 yuan ($23.30) per person, there is unlimited "flow" for the majority of items on the menu, which includes plenty of salads, meats, seafood and vegetables. Pay extra and you can enjoy more expensive items, such as kobe beef, lobster and foie gras.

A teppanyaki chef will cook in front of you. Each guest gets a small plate of sashimi with slices of salmon and tuna, while guests can help themselves to a buffet of salads, sushi, sashimi, fruits, and several other cold appetizers. Beer, soft drinks, sake and ice cream are also available.

Our tasting started with roast shrimp and mashed garlic, roast mackerel, followed by beef short rib, flamb beefsteak. We finished our meal with fried rice and diced vegetables, and a plate of watermelon and Hami melon slices.

The mackerel marinade was a bit too sweet and the fried rice not quite fragrant enough. But a manager said he was aware of a few teething troubles and they were being addressed.

One side of the restaurant on the second floor has a good view of a park in Zhongguancun Square, where the eatery has a small outdoor dining space. Service is attentive.
