State police director Fernando Monreal told reporters that the bodies were found in the town of San Miguel Totolapan, which lies in an area known for drug production and trafficking.

More bodies are likely to be found as the recovery work is to resume early Wednesday, said Monreal.

Drug trafficking violence is constant in some parts of the country among competing drug groups.

More than 30,000 people have been killed in drug-related violence since the Mexican government launched an iron-fist crackdown on drug gangs about four years ago, according to local media reports.
