ROK, US to hold talks on nuclear deterrence

SEOUL - The Republic of Korea (ROK) and the United States are planning to hold a meeting next month over US-supplied nuclear umbrella against potential nuclear threats of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), local media reported Friday citing an unspecified source.

The allies last December established the Extended Deterrence Policy Committee tasked with strengthening Washington's extended deterrence for Seoul against possible threats posed by the DPRK's nuclear program and weapons of mass destruction, according to the Yonhap report.

They are planning to hold two rounds of talks of the joint committee, with the first one slated for late next month, an unidentified source at the defense ministry said.

Officials from both sides have held a working-level meeting to discuss details of the talks, the source added.

The DPRK conducted two nuclear tests and has recently claimed it has built a new, highly sophisticated facility to enrich uranium, stoking regional security concerns.
