7.4-magnitude quake hits Japan

TOKYO - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.4 jolted Ogasawara Islands in the Pacific early Wednesday, said the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), which issued a tsunami warning.

The focus of the quake, which occurred at 2:20 am Wednesday (1720 GMT Tuesday), was located around 10 km under the sea off Chichijima in the Ogasawara island chain, some 1,000 km south of Tokyo, said the agency.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to properties.

The agency also issued tsunami advisory to Izu, Amami and Tokara islands, as well as the Pacific coasts along Shizuoka, Aichi, Mie, Wakayama, Tokushima, Kochi and Miyazaki prefectures.
